2 Things Challenge Sunday/Pattern

I had a lot of fun with this 2 Things Challenge, starting with a photo of a little country church.

At first I thought to make repeated pen and ink drawings, but then I beginning playing with the filters in Photoshop and ended up with these versions of Sunday/Pattern.

The first set is pretty normal, a little white church.

Then the image becomes more abstract.

And ends up being unrecognizeable.

2 Things Challenge Door/Effect

This 2 Things Challenge was a puzzler. How do you paint, draw, photograph "effect"? So at last I decided to show the effect of Photoshop on some photos of doors.

A Mystery Quilt in Three Parts

I decided to make the mystery quilt from the January/February 2012 issue of McCall's Quilting.

Spent some time at Hancock Fabric picking out material. A large colorful floral pattern was what I was looking for. This was as close as I could find.

I bought enough material to make the smaller 72" x 72" throw, but considering all the time there will be before the second and third issues of the magazine arrive, I might as well have made the larger version. Especially as the blocks are large and sew together quickly.

The Feminine part took longer to decide, but my Yoga Ladies are both strong and feminine and here they are..

Flying Over the Fence

Last year I was piecing this quilt in an effort to use up all my material left from years ago. Instead, I just bought more material and made more quilts and wall hangings. But forget about that. Now it is time to do the actual quilting.

The pattern is Fly Away Home from the Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork & Quilting magazine, issue 72, February 2005. Had I realized that far from being the last quilt, it would only be the beginning of a new interest in quilting, I would have bought some new fabrics with matching colors.

Blue is a wonderful color. It must be as old as mankind, always loved, sometimes considered sacred. I doubt if there is any object that has not been created in blue. Here are some of my blue things:

Summer Squares

Finished! My Summer Squares quilt is an adaptation of the Harvest Gold quilt in Quilter's World February 2011 magazine. My quilt is much smaller, 40 1/2 x 40 1/2, while the Harvest Gold quilt is 59 1/2 inches square.

Another scrap quilt. Pink and Red because those are the colors that had the most scraps.

Then I decided to go across the color wheel to add a little pop.

What else would fit the description but a yellow bar of soap.

However the bars at the playground seemed pretty good also

My little art quilts will be going to Houston to the International Quilt Festival! I'm very happy that they will be on display and hope that they will make some money for AAQI. Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative does so much to aid in finding a cure for this awful disease. I'm honored to have all of my little quilts traveling to Houston.

My Little Green Trees wall hanging is on the wall. It was fun and quick to make. Of course, now know I could make it so much better if I should make another little trees wall hanging. My family is suggesting decorations on the trees and presents underneath.

Some blocks without a home

Years ago, 35 or 40 years ago, I made these two applique blocks. I have always liked them but have never been able to work them into a quilt. I am pretty sure they are from a pattern or ad in the Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. After looking through countless old Quilter's Newsletters, I still cannot find the original pattern or advertisement. Does anyone recognize this these blocks?

Maybe I can make a wall hanging with these blocks.

Attic Windows

This quilt was a long time in the making and is especially dear to me because many of the pieces are from dresses my daughters wore when they were little. The unfinished blocks moved with me from house to house. It is mostly hand pieced, but the blocks are set together by machine sewing. The quilting is my first attempt at machine quilting.

Too many quilt blocks

Last year I bought Davina Thomas’ book 200 quilt blocks to mix and match
Davina Thomas at Amazon and proceeded to make block after block using fabric that was on hand. It was a great learning experience, but finally I realized I had well over 100 blocks and no plan.

Regrouping, I put together a quilt top using the green, white and black blocks.

And several blocks were finished into mini quilts for the Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative. http://www.alzquilts.org/index.html

This is a great cause and one I will continue to support. However they obviously prefer “arty” quilts over plain blocks. So I am trying to come up with ways to tart up some of the remaining blocks.

The blocks already submitted are off to the big Quilt Show in Houston in November. Crossing my fingers that they sell and raise a lot of money for Alzheimers research.

Some blocks I have sorted in groups similar in color and hope to make something with them. A wall hanging or lap quilt? I am not quite sure how to go about this. Suggestions?

I am having a good time sewing the angel blocks from Miriam Gourley's book Quilt and Sew Fanciful Folk Art.

Although they are all made the same, the angels seem to take on their own personalities as you sew their faces and hair. Even the way they position their bodies, arms and legs becomes their own.

I like them as they wait to be sewn and I like them when they are finished.
